City, Neighborhood, or Radius: How Local Apps Decide Who You See
Every local app answers one question before it answers any other: who counts as nearby. Three different answers are in wide use, and the one a product picks decides whether you can even sign up. Most people blame an empty local feed on a shortage of neighbors. The real cause is usually the boundary rule.
Three ways an app can decide who counts as nearby
Local social platforms scope their feeds one of three ways, and nearly every product on the market picks one and lives with the consequences. City-gating binds content to a named metro, so a post in Tulsa belongs to Tulsa and the company opens one market at a time. Neighborhood-verification binds content to a drawn polygon and checks that your address falls inside it. Radius scoping asks only where you are and how far out you want to look, then draws the circle for you. Each model strikes a different bargain between how tight the feed feels and how many people can use the product at all.
City-gated: the metro is the container
City-gated apps treat a named metro as the unit of community. You pick Denver or Tampa from a list, and everything in your feed was posted by somebody who picked the same name. Coherence is the payoff, because events, venues, and shorthand references all land, and a metro matches the way people already talk about moving to a new city. The cost is arithmetic. A city-gated feed is alive only once enough people inside that one boundary have joined, so signups have to be concentrated market by market, and everyone outside the launched list gets a screen saying the product does not serve where they live.
Neighborhood-verified: a drawn polygon plus an address check
Nextdoor is the reference implementation of the polygon model, and the mechanics are more specific than most people assume. Nextdoor's Wikipedia entry records that the company's first neighborhood boundaries were established with Maponics, a geographic-data provider, that founding members can propose a neighborhood's name and boundary while Nextdoor retains authority to change either, and that a member must attract a minimum of 10 households to establish a new neighborhood, a threshold documented as of November 2016. Nextdoor's own about page, checked in August 2026, reports roughly 350,000 neighborhoods across 11 countries. Polygons make a feed feel genuinely local. Polygons also cut real neighborhoods in half, because a line drawn by a data vendor rarely matches the four blocks a person thinks of as theirs.
What Nextdoor's verification actually asks of you
Address verification is the gate that makes the polygon model work, and Nextdoor still runs one. Nextdoor's help center article on verifying your account, checked in August 2026, lists three paths: a phone number, a postcard mailed to the address, or a LexisNexis check offered on the desktop site and iOS, and it states that members who do not verify may have limited access, which Nextdoor calls read-only mode. Verification buys real accountability, and that accountability explains much of why the polygon model works as well as it does. Verification also quietly excludes people whose paperwork does not match where they sleep: subletters, adult children back at home, anyone in the middle of a move.
Radius: the user draws their own circle
Radius scoping inverts the question. Rather than asking which container you belong to, a distance-scoped app asks where you are and how far out you want to look, usually as a ZIP code plus a distance you choose and can change whenever you want. No market has to launch, because there is no market: two people forty miles apart in farm country share a feed the moment they both widen past forty miles. Radius is also the only one of the three models that a user with a thin feed can fix without waiting on the company. Too quiet, widen it. Too noisy, tighten it.
The cold-start problem is a boundary problem
Cold start, the stretch when a local product is simply empty where you live, lasts exactly as long as the boundary rule says it does. City-gating and polygon-verification both hold the line fixed and wait for population to arrive inside it, which is why local apps so often read as ghost towns for their first year in any given place, and why so much of the writing about Nextdoor alternatives is really writing about empty feeds. Radius scoping converts that launch problem into a settings problem. The trade is honest rather than free, since a widened radius fills the feed by admitting people who are farther away.
What the radius model genuinely costs you
- A wide setting is not a neighborhood. A 500-mile radius covers a region, not a street. Distance scoping is only honest about itself if the widest settings are treated as a discovery tool rather than as a claim that those people are your neighbors.
- Edges see two downtowns. Somebody living on the boundary between two metros pulls both into a single circle, which is geographically correct and socially strange. A polygon would have picked one for them; a radius hands them the sorting.
- Miles are not minutes. Twenty miles down an interstate is half an hour. Twenty miles across a bay, a mountain range, or a rush hour is not. No distance setting knows the difference, so the number always flatters how reachable the far edge really is.
- A circle has no civic meaning. School districts, city councils, and trash pickup all follow polygons. For anything that maps onto a jurisdiction, a drawn boundary is the right tool, and pretending a circle substitutes for one helps nobody.
Why the same radius means different things in Manhattan and Montana
Density is the variable that makes one distance setting behave like four different products. The U.S. Census Bureau's final urban area criteria for the 2020 Census, published in the Federal Register on March 24, 2022, use housing-unit density thresholds of 425 units per square mile to identify an initial urban core, 200 units per square mile to extend into connected but thinner territory, and 1,275 units per square mile to mark a high-density nucleus. Those figures differ by a factor of more than six, all inside land the government still calls urban. A five-mile circle at 1,275 units per square mile holds a small city; the same circle in rural country may hold a few hundred households. The Census Bureau reported on December 29, 2022 that 80.0 percent of the U.S. population lived in urban areas at the 2020 Census, down from 80.7 percent in 2010, which means the other fifth of the country needs a wider dial than any single default provides.
A ZIP code is a mail route, not a neighborhood
ZIP codes get used as neighborhood proxies constantly, and the Census Bureau is blunt about why that is a category error. In its guidance on ZIP Code Tabulation Areas, the Bureau explains that the USPS assigns ZIP code ranges to regional post offices, which in turn assign ZIP codes to delivery routes composed of street networks and individual units with high mail volumes. A ZIP code is an operational mail path, not a bounded place, which is why the Bureau has to build a separate polygon for mapping by allocating each census block to the most frequently occurring ZIP code among its addresses. Treating a ZIP as a starting point and the distance as the actual scope is more honest than treating the ZIP itself as a community, and it is the practical difference between the tools reviewed in our roundup of apps like Nextdoor.

What is a good radius setting for a local social app?
Start at 10 miles and widen one step at a time until the feed carries posts from the past week, then stop. Density decides where you land: inside a dense urban core, 5 to 10 miles is usually plenty, while rural and exurban users often need 50 to 100 miles before a feed feels alive. Widening is reversible, so treat it as a dial rather than a permanent setting and tighten it again as more people near you join.
Why do some local apps turn you away by location?
An app that turns you away by location is almost always city-gated, meaning its content is bound to a list of launched metros rather than to your coordinates. Two consequences follow. Your access depends on that company's expansion schedule rather than on anything you can change, and the feed stays thin until that one market fills up. Radius-scoped apps do not have this failure mode, though polygon-based apps substitute an address-verification wall instead.
